Although Carolyn Hudson's seductive voice is suited for
pop, cabaret, soul, and jazz, her material isn't lite fare.
On this smoothly produced debut album Hudson's lyrics are
about love disappointed ("It Doesn't Count," "Wraparound
Soul") and people making sense of things ("Dorothy").
The sense of detachment and personal insight makes Hudson
the female equivalent to Bryan Ferry - that there's more
to the surface than meets the eye. She can also turn in
a sexy performance as in the half-spoken word "Patiently
For Roses." Living in My Skin is a sophisticated album
that does not trivialize matters of the heart.
Carolyn Hudson:
Soulful, Sultry, and Sophisticated
By David Chiu
Carolyn Hudson moved to New York almost six years ago to
make her mark as a singer. Whereas most people would see
that as a logical step for her career, Hudson's other main
motivation for going to the Big Apple was slightly more
personal.
